Today marks a historic time in the United States. Marriage equality is finally noticed in all 50 states. Not one person or group of people can take credit for today’s ruling, but the Silicon Valley can be seen as playing an important role.

Leaders from companies including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon filed a brief with the Supreme Court in support of overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, also known as DOMA. They each argued that their businesses were burdened with the task of keeping track of the definition of marriage when it came to applying it to benefits, taxes, and other administrative issues.

Along with the HR issues it was creating, came low morale and forced some businesses to go against their own beliefs. “In the modern workplace, the employer becomes the face of DOMA’s discriminatory treatment, and is placed in the role of intrusive inquisitor, imputer of taxable income, and withholder of benefits,” it reads.

“Love Wins” can be found all over social media today, including Twitter and Instagram. This along with millions of people celebrating including the leaders from the companies mentioned earlier are plastered everywhere. This decision will make morale higher and bookkeeping simpler. Those benefits aren’t the only reason why these people are celebrating, the Silicone Valley have the type of people who are used to making things they want to see in the world a reality and now they can add this to their ever growing list.
